As the academic year comes to a close, the New Bedford High School Young Alumni Association released a college application guide on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at a press conference at New Bedford High School. The guide, which discusses important topics pertaining to the college application process, such as financial aid, application essays, and college entrance exams, is aimed at helping New Bedford students with applying to college.

While multiple NBHS alumni contributed to the construction of the guide, the project was spearheaded by Nicholas Lawrence ’12, who recently graduated from Boston College and will be entering a master’s degree program at New York University in the fall.

“We are so excited for the release of this document. Coming from New Bedford, there are some specific challenges that students face with respect to the college application process. We’re hoping that this guide, which will also be made available in both Spanish and Portuguese, will be able to help our students overcome these barriers. Our guide is very specifically targeted to New Bedford students. Every step of the way, we held them in mind,” said Lawrence.

In addition to providing students with useful information regarding the college application process, the Young Alumni Association hopes the release of the guide will encourage them to think about attending college during the summer months. Co-chair Justin Braga ’12, who recently graduated from Brown University and will enter the Juris Doctor program at Georgetown University Law Center in the fall, expressed this sentiment.

“As students leave school for summer vacation, we hope our guide will serve as a gentle reminder for students to take some time to research the college application process while school is out of session. Our guide is both comprehensive and concise, and we’re confident that it will serve as a useful tool for New Bedford students as they navigate the process of applying to college,” said Braga.

“This guide is a great resource for New Bedford High students as they consider their options for the future, and our young alumni are great role models in showing our students that they can go on to great success in college and in the workforce,” said Headmaster Bernadette Coelho. “It’s wonderful to see how supportive our network of young alumni have been in working with current students on college and career readiness since the association was founded last year.”

English, Portuguese and Spanish versions of the guide will be made available online at the NBPS website as well as the Young Alumni Association’s Facebook page and its website. Paper copies can be retrieved at the Paul Rodrigues Administration Building. Those with inquiries are encouraged to contact nbhsyoungalumni@gmail.com for more information.
