Wareham F.D. mourn passing of Calvin Hitchcock, former Wareham “out-of-town” Firefighter

“The Wareham Fire Department regrets to announce the passing of Calvin W. Hitchcock, retired Chief of the Otis Air Force Base Fire Department, and former member of the Town of Wareham, Out of District Fire Department. He passed in Norwell, Massachusetts, on April 17, 2023 after a long illness.

Chief Hitchcock served in the US Navy in the Communication Information Center aboard the USS Bataan. Honorably discharged, he began his firefighting career in 1952. Employed by the Department of Defense under the United States Air Force at Otis AFB, Massachusetts, he was with the Fire Department as a Crash/Firefighter, Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention, and finally retired as Chief of the department in 1982.

He also served the citizens of Wareham as a Call Firefighter assigned to Center Stations “Monahan’s”. During that time, he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Training/Drillmaster for the town department with 30 years of dedicated service to the Town of Wareham.
