New Bedford Police and the New Bedford Department of Public Infrastructure are investigating reports of vandalized graves in the veterans section of Rural Cemetery.

The incident took place sometime between Saturday and Monday. The graves were not broken or toppled but tire tracks were visible on the flat gravestones. Grass was also torn up in the area.

A witness said that vehicles frequently drive in the open field and turn up grass but this was the first time he remembered seeing the graves marred.

Extra patrols will be assigned to the cemetery. No suspects have been named.

New Bedford police and DPI commissioner Zeb Arruda and the DPI are investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call the police department at 508-991-6350 or the anonymous tip line at 508-992-7463 or e-mail tip@newbedfordpd.com.
