New Bedford Police Chief David Provencher passes away from respiratory arrest

At approximately 7:30 PM this evening, New Bedford Police Chief David A. Provencher passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. The cause of his death was respiratory arrest.

“Tonight the City of New Bedford lost an outstanding police chief and a great man. Our prayers go out to Dave’s family. We will do everything in our power to support them at this most difficult time,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell.

Mayor Mitchell added, “Chief Provencher leaves behind a legacy of a more modern and effective police department and a stronger New Bedford community. I am shocked and saddened by his passing. I will miss him as a colleague and friend.” Funeral arrangments for Chief Provencher will be announced as soon as they are made.
