“On May 23rd, at around 11 PM, patrol units responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Reynolds St. and Cedar Grove. Upon arrival, shell casings were located in the street.

As a result of the investigation that followed, a warrant was issued for IVANILDO MENDES ALVES, 21, of 107 Reynolds St. It was learned that on that evening, ALVES fired shots from the porch of his residence at a victim who was on the sidewalk. Fortunately, the victim was not injured.

On June 8th, New Bedford Police detectives, assisted by troopers assigned to the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section of the Massachusetts State Police, took ALVES into custody. During a search of the suspect’s residence, ammunition was also located.

ALVES is charged with assault with intent to murder, possessing, carrying, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and possession of ammunition.

Detectives Timothy Soares and Jordan Ferreira were the lead investigators on the case.

“These cases can be difficult to investigate. It takes the full attention of every officer involved, from the first patrol unit on the scene to the detectives who follow up on each available lead. I’d like to thank everyone involved in bringing this dangerous offender into custody.” -Chief Paul Oliveira ,
