“Narcotics detectives have arrested a local man with drugs, money, and an illegal firearm in the city’s north end.
On January 2nd, at around 6:30 PM, detectives were following up on complaints concerning drug activity in the area of Hathaway St. near Ashley Blvd. At this time, Detective Sergeant Jonathan Lagoa was conducting surveillance in this area when he observed a drug transaction taking place. As a result of Lagoa’s observations, a vehicle operated by the suspected dealer was stopped. The suspect was identified as JORDAN JAMES, 18, of 68 Hathaway St., #2.
A further investigation then followed, culminating in a search of JAMES’ vehicle and his nearby apartment. 27 bags of marijuana weighing approximately 523 grams in total were discovered along with 86 grams of psychedelic mushrooms and 8 cannabis vapes. Scales and packaging materials used in the processing of street-level narcotics sales were also found. $1873 in cash was seized as proceeds from illicit narcotics sales.
In addition, detectives located a Polymer-80 handgun loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition in a 13-round magazine.
JAMES was taken into custody and charged with possession of a high-capacity firearm and ammunition without a license, as well as possession of classes D and C substances with intent to distribute.
Although legal marijuana is available at licensed dispensaries, street-level sales remain illegal and are dangerous for a variety of reasons. For example, marijuana purchased illegally can be tainted with harmful chemicals or materials as they are not subject to inspection. Additionally, street marijuana can also be sold to individuals who are not of age to purchase it legally. For these reasons and more, it is important to continue to address the problem of street-level sales.
