New Bedford High School continues its ‘Tradition of Excellence’

The New Bedford High School Mixed Show Choir, Pure Energy, won Best in Showcase at the New England Show Choir Classic on March 7. The choir performed “Theme from James Bond,” “Swingin’ at Basie’s Place,” “I’ll be There” with soloists Carina Borges and Michael Mezhberg, “Smooth” and “Sing a Song.”

Pure Energy received a silver ranking and won Best in Showcase for a small mixed division.

Pure Energy is a 38-member show choir under the direction of Lynne-Marie Dandeneau, with choreographers Samantha Nunes, Chaysen Cabral, Cierra Vicente and Dandeneau, and accompanist Erik Thompson. “Pure Energy is yet another example of the remarkable achievements of our New Bedford High students,” said Superintendent Pia Durkin. “We’re incredibly proud of our students and we’re proud that NBHS offers the widest range of music curriculum and extracurricular activities in the area. These wonderful students, their director and advisors deserve tremendous credit.”

“The New Bedford High School music department continues its ‘Tradition of Excellence’ with this recent accomplishment,” said Kerri Quinlan-Zhou, director of fine arts for New Bedford Public Schools. “The students and teachers work very hard to be ready vocally and with their dance skills and we are very proud of them.”

The show choir will be repeating its award-winning performance in tonight’s Jazz Extravaganza, 7 p.m. at New Bedford High’s Bronspiegel Auditorium.
