New Bedford Fire Department undertakes “Mayday” exercises to rescue their own in a crisis

“During a mayday situation communication is key.

A mayday is called when a Firefighter is in trouble and needs immediate assistance. Nearly every Firefighter in New Bedford from every shift relayed a mayday message for a drill in combination with dispatch and command.

This NBFD training exercise improved not only our firefighters skills but also command (District Chiefs) and Dispatchers (who are also NBFD Firefighters). The Training Division obtained audio after each individual drill, Firefighters listened to the audio from their drill and critiqued themselves under the guidance of the Training Division to improve future communications.”-New Bedford Fire Department.
