New Bedford, Fairhaven Fire Departments respond to Fairhaven Village fire; families displaced

“On Sunday, February 26, 2023, at 1608 (4:08 p.m.) the Fairhaven Fire Department received an automatic alarm for the Fairhaven Village, a multistory apartment complex located at 330 Main Street in Fairhaven.

On arrival, the crews encountered heavy smoke on the 3rd and 4th floors of the east wing. The crews found the source of the fire in unit 302D, where the room and contents were on fire. The east wing was evacuated by fire crews as they worked to extinguish the fire. The fire was declared under control at 1630 (4:30 p.m.) and contained to the unit of origin. Firefighters remained on the scene to investigate the cause and overhaul the apartment. All units cleared at 2030 (8:30 p.m.).

Two families are displaced because of the fire. The American Red Cross has assisted both families.

Injuries: One police officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at St. Luke’s Hospital. One cat was rescued and transferred to an animal hospital by Fairhaven Animal Control for treatment and observation.

Cause: The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fairhaven Fire Department, the Fairhaven Police Department, and the Massachusetts Fire Marshalls Office.

Estimated Damage: The damage is contained to the room of origin and the apartment directly below. The damage estimates are between $25,000 and $50,000.

Mutual Aid: Mutual aid was received by the Mattapoisett Fire Department, Acushnet Fire Department/EMS, and the New Bedford Fire Department.”-Fairhaven Fire-EMS.
