“Early Thursday morning Troopers assigned to the State Police K-9 Section were advised that members of the Acton Police Department were seeking K-9 assistance for the search of a suspect that fled from a scene on foot. Trooper Daniel Purtell responded to scene and was briefed by members of Acton PD.
They were seeking a 33-year-old male that had attempted to gain access to a female’s residence using a ladder on the side of her house. They were able to identify the man at which point it was discovered he had five active warrants for his arrest.
Trooper Purtell was able to use a back pack that the suspect had dropped as a scent article for K-9 Binks (pictured) to lock on to. The pair then began a track in the direction the suspect had fled. K-9 Binks showed signs of acquiring the suspect’s scent and pulled up a path and to the right along the back side of a shopping plaza.
Binks continued to track around the back side of the property following a fence away from the residence. Once around the property he pulled along the right side of a road toward a heavily wooded spot. Binks twice pulled into the brush but came back out and took a quick right through a yard. Binks pulled into a condo complex but did not appear to be tracking anymore. After clearing the area K-9 appeared to lose the scene track at which point the pair began the return trip to the scene.
During the return walk K-9 Binks appeared to pick scent back up and again pulled into the same wooded area as he did before. This time he did not come out and appeared to display frantic behavior. Trooper Purtell held K-9 Binks from proceeding further and made two verbal commands for the suspect to surrender.
There was no response but Trooper Purtell heard crashing through the brush. Within a short time other Troopers and Officers on scene Acton Police had the suspect in custody. The suspect was transported to Acton Police for booking.”
