The Massachusetts State Police reported that at approximately 2:30am on Saturday morning, a Randolph man rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Route 24 in Avon.

State Police investigators stated that 30-year-old Richard Maurice was driving his 2020 Toyota Camry in the middle lane when he collided with a 2018 Freightliner, went into the median, and caught fire. The Freightliner driven by an unidentified 44-year-old New Bedford man went off to the right side of the road and struck a guardrail. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by ambulance.

First responders were able to remove Maurice before his Camry was fully engulfed in flames. State police troopers, Avon firefighters, and paramedics treated him at the scene, then transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where he was pronounced dead.

All three lanes on Route 24 south in the area of the crash were closed for just over three hours.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
