Faces Of New Bedford – #57 Jeff St. Pierre

Meet Jeff St. Pierre, 34-year-old artist and barber.

Growing up in the late 80s and 90s, he followed in the footsteps of his older brother, indulging himself in the emerging urban and hip hop scene. His brother and friends taught him everything they knew about graffiti, fueling his love for art and the art form itself.

As he got older, still pushing himself as an artist, he would mess around cutting his friends hair after school. As the word spread about his talents with the clippers, more and more kids reached out to him to cut his hair. It was around this time that he was going to school for art at BCC, that he realized how much he’d love to go to school to cut hair and open his own place.

While pursuing his license, he was still spraying, featuring his murals in the Third Eye festivals every year. In 2003, he opened his first shop, Surpreme Clientele, where he learned a lot about running a business and after 5 years closed the doors. Between then and now, he has worked at various shops and even worked for the Steamship Authority.

During his time at with the Steamship Authority, he would still try to find ways to be creative, drawing on hot dog boxes during his lunches. Knowing that he took the job in order to provide a better life for his family, he was torn between two roads. He knew that he wanted to do more than he was and quit his position at the Steamship Authority to open his own shop and do things differently.

With his upcoming opening, he hopes that New Bedford Barber Company will be a staple in the downtown New Bedford area. The want to take the approach that would be the crossroads between urban barbershops and salons, allowing a positive atmosphere that everyone would feel comfortable visiting. He also wants it to be larger than just a barbershop, featuring art from local artists and getting involved with AHA events every month.
