This Saturday the Shriners Club of Southeastern Mass will be sponsoring the UMass Dartmouth Homecoming Football Game to raise awareness and funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Saturday’s event will kick off at 4:00 and places the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs against the Plymouth State Panthers in what is sure to be an exciting game. This event is the latest in a long collaboration between UMass and the Shriners and replaces their annual Shriners Day Track Meet and Football Game, which they held for the past 10 years.
The Shrine Club of S.E. Mass was founded in 1927 as the local chapter of Shriners International and sponsors many charitable endeavors including: raising awareness about the Shriners Hospitals and sponsoring patients, and raising funds for the Shriners Hospitals by collecting and recycling pull-tabs and other fundraising activities. They also are involved in many other philanthropic activities, including: collecting eyeglasses for the Lions, collecting worn American flags which are retired by Troop 7 New Bedford, and conducting an annual holiday party for the Schwartz Center for Children where 150 stockings are given to the patients, Dr. Schwartz was a Shriner and member of the Shrine Club of S.E. Mass.
Shriners International is a fraternity with over 340,000 members worldwide based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, truth, and relief (because all Shriners must first be Freemasons). Shriners are a premier fraternal organization for men of good character and their purpose is to gather for fun and fellowship. Moreover, they foster self-improvement through leadership, education, and community involvement.
Shriners Hospitals for Children are a network of 22 specialty pediatric hospitals, which provide world-class care to children up to 18 in the fields of burn injury care, treatment of orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injury care, rehabilitation as well as cleft lip and palette care all regardless of a patient’s ability to pay or relationship to a Shriner.
Members of the Shrine Club of Southeastern Mass hope that with the ongoing support of the community, they can continue to assure that children from all over the world will receive the care they need regardless of their financial need or relationship to a Shriner.
