“Sunday morning at 5:21am, 911 calls were received reporting a structure fire at 3 Nelson Street. Engine 6 reported a fire extending from the first floor to the roof on Side C of the structure. This building is a three-story wood-frame structure containing six dwelling units. The residents were made aware of the fire by a working fire alarm system.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the apartment of origin on the first floor. Firefighters also conducted a primary search of the building and deployed attack lines to the 2nd and 3rd floor. Firefighters also prevented any fire extension to the attic. Firefighters rescued one cat and found at least one other that had expired.
The fire cause was investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and determined to be accidental. There are twelve adults and three children who are displaced by the fire. They are being assisted by the City of New Bedford Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross of Massachusetts. The Special Signal Fire Association / Providence Canteen also provided assistance on scene. There were no civilian injuries. The City of New Bedford Police Department (Official) and New Bedford EMS also assisted at the scene.
The NBFD and NBEMA would like thank SERTA (Southeastern Regional Transit Authority) also dispatched a bus to the scene for the displaced residents.”-New Bedford Fire Department.
