Massachusetts goats up for fee-waived adoption in Goat-A-Thon weekend

“Join us for our first-ever Fee-Waived Adoptathon for Goats!

Do these warmer, sunny days have you planning to expand your farm animal menagerie this spring? If you were thinking of adding goats to the mix, now is the time! Thanks to generous donors, all adoption fees for goats will be waived on Saturday April 1 and Sunday April 2, from 10am-3pm.

Nevins Farm still has a huge herd of goats in need of loving homes. We even still have some young goats who were born here last spring! These particular goats should remain a closed herd due to some potential disease exposure, meaning they cannot join an existing herd of goats (or other ruminants). But that also makes them great for folks who are newer to farm animals or have just recently gained the capacity to adopt!

Goats are very social animals, so we are aiming to send them home in groups of at least three so they will always have companionship and playmates. We have wethers and does of several different breeds (Nigerian Dwarfs, Alpines, and La Manchas), so no matter what you’re looking for, we likely have a match. You can find all of our adoptable goats here. Please inquire to learn more!

Registration for the event is recommended but not required. Sign up today to secure your spot! https://fb.me/e/1bLUC3jJj.”-MSPCA-Angell.

New Bedford Fire Department to light up Elm Street Garage for National Fallen Firefighters weekend

“In recognition of National Fallen Firefighters Weekend and the start of Fire Prevention Week, the lights at the Elm Street Garage will shine red from Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15.

One hundred forty-eight names were read at the memorial service this year honoring those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Fire Prevention Week highlights how important working smoke alarms, a clear exit path, and a well-planned escape route are in the event a fire occurs in your residence.

This week two fires occurred requiring residents to be rescued over ground ladders, aerial ladders, and interior stairwells. A third fire at a thirteen-unit dwelling rendered it uninhabitable.

In addition to some of the residents suffering injuries, approximately two dozen were displaced by these fires. These are a few recent examples that show fire safety should never be taken for granted.” -New Bedford Fire Department.

Massachusetts Environmental Police adding extra boat patrols to deal with BUIs on July 4th weekend

“The Massachusetts Environmental Police will be joining law enforcement agencies from across the country who will be on heightened alert this Fourth of July weekend for those in violation of boating under the influence laws.

Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating incidents. Alcohol consumption can affect you quicker in a boating environment due to sun, wind, boat vibration, and the motion of the vessel while underway.

Massachusetts law prohibits anyone from operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance. A person is considered to be boating under the influence (BUI) if their blood or breath alcohol concentration is .08% or greater or they are under the influence of any controlled substance. Individuals convicted of BUI may face imprisonment, fines, and have their motor vehicle license and vessel registrations revoked.

Keep it simple, don’t drink and boat!” -Massachusetts Environmental Police.

City of New Bedford announces parking ban for looming weekend nor’easter

With heavy snow expected from late Friday through Saturday evening, a citywide snow emergency PARKING BAN will take effect at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, to allow City workers to efficiently remove snow from roadways and enable public safety vehicles and residents to travel safely. The parking ban will be strictly enforced and effective until lifted by City officials.

The parking ban will be strictly enforced and will remain in effect for 48 hours, unless lifted or further extended by City officials. The parking ban is designed to allow City workers to efficiently remove snow from New Bedford roadways, and enable public safety vehicles and residents to travel safely.

While the snow emergency parking ban is in effect, parking is permitted on the north side of all streets going east and west, and is permitted on the east side of all streets going north and south. The permitted side of the street is typically the side opposite of the fire hydrants.

Please note that on streets that are normally posted for parking on one side of the street only, residents are to obey the signs as usual. Vehicles should never be parked within ten (10) feet of a fire hydrant or twenty (20) feet from a corner as required by law, regardless of whether a snow ban is in effect.

Double-sided Parking Ban Areas

To increase public safety during storm events, the areas designated for a double-sided parking ban include sections of numerous streets (listed below), in addition to the Downtown and Acushnet Avenue Business Districts, where double-sided bans have been implemented in years past. The street sections were selected because they are major routes for ambulances, school buses, and SRTA buses, and have a history of large vehicles being unable to successfully navigate due to the narrowness of the street.

During a snow emergency parking ban, therefore, no parking is permitted on either side of the street in the following areas:

• Wood St (Acushnet Ave to Belleville Ave)
• Acushnet Ave (Tarkiln Hill Rd to Coggeshall St)
• Nash Rd (Acushnet Ave to Belleville Ave)
• Ashley Blvd (Nash Rd to Coggeshall St)
• County St (Purchase St to Cove Rd)
• Cottage St (Durfee St to Union St)
• Mill St (Kempton St to Pleasant St)
• Kempton St (Brownell Ave to Pleasant St)
• The Downtown Business District (County St to JFK Blvd, Kempton St to Walnut St)
• Dartmouth St (Allen St to Matthew St)
• Rivet St (Dartmouth St to JFK Blvd)

Violations of the snow emergency parking ban will be subject to ticketing at $50 per ticket, and towing at full cost to the owner of the vehicle towed. The vehicle owner is also responsible for the full cost of storage for any towed vehicle.

The City of New Bedford has designated the following areas as preferred parking areas for residents in need of off-street parking while the emergency snow parking ban is in effect:
