Handicapped New Bedford resident can’t park because of violators constantly occupying it

“I live in the south end my husband and I are both disabled.

Back in November of 2023 we filed for a handicap parking sign to be put in front of our home. It was put up quickly but within 48 hours I had to call the police four times because people were parking in the parking spot even though they weren’t handicapped.

I had to park around the block and walk back to my home and leave my husband waiting in the front of the house (he’s on oxygen and a dialysis patient). So I complained to the City about this so they posted a second sign in hopes no one else would park there.

Nope. People still continue to park there. It’s frustrating and the police said, ‘If the vehicle is registered all we can do is ticket it.’ How’s this right? A person can park illegally while the disabled person has to suffer in search of a parking spot and struggle to walk back to their home?!

Please help with this ongoing problem in New Bedford.”-Jennifer De Mello.
