New Bedford firefighters rescue elderly woman and her dog from Union Street fire

“Shortly after 3:00pm yesterday, the New Bedford Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 436 Union Street.

Command Unit 2 District Chief James Fortin arrived on scene and reported fire extending from the exterior wall on the second floor in the rear of this three-family wood frame dwelling. Neighbors reported a female occupant remained in the building.

District Chief Fortin ascended the rear stairs to the second-floor hallway, located an elderly female and her dog, and assisted them outside the residence.

Engines 1, 6, 7, Ladders 1 and 3 confined the fire to the rear of the second-floor porch roof and wall area. No tenants were displaced by the fire-

The elderly female was treated on scene by NBEMS Paramedics did not require transport to the hospital. The cause of the fire was investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit and determined to be accidental.

NBEMA and New Bedford Police Department provided assistance on scene.”
