New Bedford Fire Department respond to structure fire on Sycamore Street

“Shortly before noon yesterday, the New Bedford Fire Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a structure fire at 126-128 Sycamore Street. Command Unit 2 reported fire extending from a second floor into the attic of the fire building and also threatening an exposed dwelling a few feet away.

Engine 7 initially attacked the exterior fire to prevent vertical extension as well as extension into the nearby residence. They then advanced a hoseline to the second floor to being extinguishment. They were assisted by Engines 1 and 8, Ladders 1 and 3, as well as Command Unit 1. The fire was contained to a second floor bedroom. Additional hoselines were advanced to the third floor and attic and prevented further extension of the fire. The exposed residence sustained exterior fire damage but was able to remained occupied.

Crews were assisted on scene by the NBPD, NBEMS, NBEMA, and the Providence Canteen. Animal Control Officers were able to retrieve a dog from the first floor apartment. The thirteen displaced tenants were assisted by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the NBFD Fire Investigation Unit. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
