New Bedford community Christmas Caroling (and Cocoa) at the Common

On the evening of December 21, 2019, residents and visitors alike are invited to join in the 7th Annual Community Christmas Caroling event in partnership with “Cocoa in the Common”. Carolers will meet at the southeast corner of Clasky Common Park. Lyric books, electric candles, and baked goods will be provided to participants. No singing experience is required — all are welcome to join in harmony on this one magical night.

This year instead of knocking on doors, the carolers will meet in the park for an hour of stationary singing while Destination Soups owner Devin Byrnes offers free cocoa to passers-by. Last year, the event attracted 40 families who rose their voices in song for the love of the Christmas season.

The caroling group has evolved over its six-year history. Previously, carolers have gone door-to-door around Buttonwood Park with their tunes. Last year, the group made the move to Clasky to accommodate the growing number of participating families and join Byrnes’s event (which regularly features local performers). “Each year I am overcome with emotion by all the families who come together,” says MIMO-affiliated organizer, Cynthia Roy. “Many of us are not professional singers. We just grab lyric books and put love into it.” This year, the organizers are welcoming Meighread Dandeneau, a former Miss New Bedford, to the team.

Byrnes intends to take the Clasky Common holiday light display “to the next level as a family friendly holiday destination.” The idea is to “collaborate with other community building individuals to expand the overall participation around the holiday display.”

The event has previously been organized by MIMO (Mindful Moms), a local group of like-minded moms who feel strongly about parenting mindfully, taking responsibility for the health of our planet, and building a vibrant, loving community. MIMO organizes play groups, volunteer work, and family-oriented community events in the New Bedford area.
