Massachusetts Environmental Police mourn passing of Boating Safety Instructor, John Potito

“It is with great sadness that the Massachusetts Environmental Police announce the passing of longtime Boating Safety Instructor John Potito.

John has a long legacy of public service. John retired as a Senior Chief in the United States Coast Guard. He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, conducting riverine operations upon perilous inland waterways. In his post-military career, he was a respected high school teacher. John has also been an Assistant Harbormaster with the Marion Harbormaster’s Office for over three decades. John spent his winters in Florida and while there he also worked with the County Sheriff’s Office maritime unit.

John’s commitment and contributions to MEP’s Boat Massachusetts education program during his decades of service were immeasurable. He loved instructing and looked forward to scheduling classes every spring. His many years of service were recognized when he was named Boating Educator of the Year by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

John was truly the salt of the earth – kind, selfless, and compassionate. He will be greatly missed.”-“Massachusetts Environmental Police.
