Freetown and Rochester Fire Departments, animal control respond to structure fire on North Avenue

“At 12:39 on this date the RFD received a report of a structure fire at a residence on North Ave at the far north end of town.

The first due engine company arrived on scene within 8mins from the time of the call and found heavy fire and smoke conditions in the attached garage. All occupants and animals had exited the residence prior to the arrival of responding apparatus.

The RFD mounted an aggressive interior attack and stopped the fire from entering the living space of the residence, the fire was quickly knocked down in the garage area but not before extending into the attic space. Interior crews were able to access the attic and knock down the fire which had extended into that space.

Crews remained on scene knocking down hotspots and overhauling for approximately 2hrs. One occupant of the residence was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but remains under investigation by the RFD.

Special thanks to the Freetown FD and Rochester Animal Control and Rochester Police for controlling traffic and keeping us safe at the scene. A mutual aid tanker was requested from Freetown Fire and the Rochester Animal Control was called in to assist in sheltering the family pets while the occupants of the residence deal with this tragic event.
