Massachusetts State Police Troopers, Air Wing, K-9s, unite to search for missing 87-year old

“On the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, Troopers from the State Police-Russell Barracks and members of the Massachusetts State Police K9 Unit, Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), and Air Wing responded to assist Russell Police with the search for a missing 87-year-old man with dementia.

The man had been last seen shortly after noon in the area of Blandford Road. Russell and State Police patrols were checking area homes and businesses for the man. Meanwhile, MSP K9 teams observed several footprints in the snow leading eastward from a nearby residential driveway down a steep embankment into the woods.

MSP K9 Unit Trooper Ken Hanchett deployed his partner, Orry, who quickly acquired a scent and began to pull down the hill. Upon reaching the bottom, Trooper Hanchett and Orry tracked across a flooded and frozen stretch of ground into a clearing. Once in the clearing, Orry showed a proximity alert and soon pulled intensely across another overgrown and frozen area to a large tree. They were assisted on the track by K9 Trooper John Areche and SERT Trooper Timothy Fanion.

Simultaneously, MSP Air 4, one of the helicopters in the Department’s Air Wing, was conducting an aerial search and observed a heat signature in the vicinity of the K9 team. As Orry pulled toward the tree, Trooper Hanchett observed the elderly man lying on the ground.

By this point it was approximately 8 PM on a very cold day, nearly eight hours after the man was last seen. Troopers Hanchett, Areche, and Fanion began rendering emergency first aid. Additional SERT Troopers responded to the location. Troopers carried the man, who was non-ambulatory, to a waiting ambulance, which transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment of cold exposure injuries.”-Massachusetts State Police.

Photo captures sad “Rise and Fall” of Taunton’s “Silver City Galleria” 32 years after grand opening

A recent drone photograph of the vacant land where the Silver City Galleria Mall once stood in Taunton, Massachusetts, has sparked a wave of nostalgia among residents. The image, taken from above by the aerial photography page “Aerial New England”, contrasts sharply with a photograph captured on March 1st, 1992, the day the mall first opened, when the entire parking lot was bustling with cars and eager shoppers.

The Silver City Galleria Mall, a beloved landmark that once symbolized the heart of retail and community spirit, has since closed its doors, and the once-vibrant building has been reduced to rubble. However, the site is not destined to remain empty. In July 2022, the Taunton Planning Board approved a site plan for a major redevelopment project at the former mall location.

The plan originally included the construction of a FedEx distribution center, but FedEx has since reevaluated it due to financial factors.

In January 2024, Portman Industrial secured $29 million for the first phase of Silver City Business Park, a 1.1-million-square-foot industrial park at the former Silver City Galleria Mall site in Taunton, MA. The site was purchased in 2021 for $75 million, and phase one will include a 248,435-square-foot building with modern amenities. The park will eventually feature four warehouses of varying sizes, with the three larger ones reaching 55 feet in height.

As construction progresses and the landscape changes, the drone photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the mall’s past glory days and a bittersweet glimpse into its future. The redevelopment of the former Silver City Galleria Mall site represents not just a physical transformation but also a nostalgic journey through cherished memories of days gone by.

Massachusetts woman, second to die in snow mobile accident in New Hampshire

“Saturday Marked By Serious Incidents in the North Country:

Gorham: Shortly after noon on Saturday, February 24, 2024 rescue personnel from multiple agencies responded to a remote trail near Pine Mountain to assist a snowmobiler who had suffered significant injuries after crashing into trees.

At approximately 1207 hours, personnel from Gorham Fire and EMS, Randolph Fire Department and New Hampshire Fish and Game Department were dispatched to the Bear Springs snowmobile trail to assist a female operator who had crashed and was unresponsive. The location of the crash was approximately 5 miles from the Randolph Fire Department, and responders utilized snowmobiles and a tracked rescue vehicle to access the scene.

Upon arrival, responders found CPR in progress being performed on the crash victim by her riding companion. Responders joined in the CPR effort, but the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 1:00 PM. The victim was ultimately transported from the scene to the Randolph Fire Station following an on-scene investigation by Conservation Officers.

The victim was identified as 48-year-old Krista Bebezas from Massachusetts. Although the investigation into this incident is ongoing, it is the belief of investigators that operator inexperience played a significant role in the crash.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the unexpected death of our beloved Krista, a devoted mother of two beautiful girls, a loving daughter, an amazing sister, and a dear friend to so many. We thank everyone for their outpouring of support and please kindly ask that you continue to respect our privacy. We will be making no further comment at this time,” the family said in a statement.

On Feb. 16, 39-year-old Shawnee Hollis, of North Brookfield, Massachusetts, passed away after she crashed a snowmobile in same North Country region, this time in Milan, New Hampshire. Fish and Game officials said that inexperience was again the leading factor in that crash.”-NH Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief.

OPINION: “Sheriff Heroux has changed the tenor, atmosphere at the Bristol County House of Correction”

The following is an opinion sent to New Bedford Guide. It does not reflect the opinion of New Bedford Guide, nor is it an OP-ED. In fairness and objectivity, we share opinions from our readers whether we agree or disagree with their opinion.

“Sheriff Heroux is creative, considerate and cost conscious.

Without exception the articles, letters from inmates (obtained through freedom of information requests) press releases and consistent feedback from employees, indicate that Sheriff Paul Heroux has, in a relatively brief time, changed the tenor and atmosphere at the Bristol County House of Correction.

The diminishing staff problem he inherited has been resolved with an ever increasing list of applicants who, it appears, have heard of the changed work environment.

The more intensive medical and psychological evaluations, in tandem with the professionally recommended protocols for suicide prevention, are being implemented as promised. And additionally, and creatively, the cells and bunk beds are being remodeled to reduce suicide risks, provide privacy and decrease violence amongst inmates.

These bunk modifications are being constructed by the inmates as job training, as well as sending the message that their safety and rehabilitation are of major concern to Sheriff Heroux.

The Sheriff is also ever mindful of the enormous costs associated with punitive incarceration that has proven to increase recidivism and produces a safety threat to staff as well as to inmates.

And the Sheriff, in response to the destruction caused by a handful of inmates , has also indicated that he will not accept belligerent and abusive behavior and those alleged to have committed assaultive and destructive actions will be criminally charged.

Clearly Sheriff Heroux is implementing major changes with the objectives of reducing the incentives for the released inmates to re-offend and for them to re-enter society with job skills and hopefully a sense of responsibility to their families and community.”-Betty Ussach, Dartmouth.

Lakeville Firefighters battle massive car fire Sunday afternoon

“Sunday afternoon car fire:

Multiple reports of a car fire sent firefighters to Tyler’s Way at 12:10 pm Sunday. Engine 2, Tanker 1, and Car 2 responded to the area.

The operator of the vehicle reported a mechanical failure and then discovered a fire upon exiting the vehicle. All occupants and a dog were able to get out of the vehicle without injury.

Muddy conditions made accessing the fire difficult and Engine 2 became stuck in the mud for a short time.”-Lakeville Fire Department.

New Bedford Firefighters battle early morning blaze on Jenney Street

At approximately 1:00am, New Bedford Fire Department and EMS, received reports of a structure afire at 171 Jenney Street near the Boys & Girls Club.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered a stone 2-car garage fully engulfed, a car outside the garage on fire, and two adjacant tenement buildings at risk.

Fireighters made extremely quick work of putting out the fire whose source was the garage and doused the adjacant buildings with water to cool down the surface thereby preventing those structures from catching fire.

Eyewitnesses on scene mentioned that there where families in both tenements including a number of children and that an adult woman had sustained injuries of an unknown nature.

“The New Bedford Fire Departments was amazing at the scene!” said one woman who preferred not be be named. “They literally are superheroes!”

This is a developing story which will be updated throughout the day as more information comes in.
