Manages, creates and/or delivers exceptional programming and educational opportunities within the library, through community outreach and virtually. Teaches and collaborates with patrons, staff and a variety of organizations to create content, be effective consumers of information and provide lifelong learning experiences. Answers reference and information questions and performs advisory services, including reader’s advisory and programming, for all patrons with an emphasis on adults. Recommends, reviews and selects materials for purchase. Assesses and weeds the adult non-fiction and reference collections. Trains library users to search for information by following appropriate inquiry processes, using books and/or electronic resources. Supervises the daily operation of the Reference and Technical Services section at the Main Library, including providing direction to library staff and volunteers. Maintains records and reports as required by the Library Director. Applies for and coordinates grants as required by the Library Director. Represents the library at appropriate SAILS meetings and informs staff of updates of procedures and policies. Visits appropriate community agencies to inform them of available library services and special projects. Strives to meet the objectives of the library as established by the Board of Trustees. Administers assigned area of library operations to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes work loads and staff assignments; trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed. Provides professional advice on library issues to the Library Director and makes presentations when required. Ensures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned areas to ensure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests in assigned area; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time. Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures. Assists with various special library activities, such as book sales, displays and reading programs. Assists staff in performing duties; corrects errors and resolves complaints. Performs other related duties as required. The above covers the most significant responsibilities of this position. It does not, however, exclude other occasional duties, the inclusion of which would be in conformity with the level of the position.

Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited college or university required. Experience with public programming creation, project management, outreach and strategic planning preferred. Some library experience in a reference department required. Supervisory experience preferred. Commitment to customer service principles and practices with dedicated emphasis towards excellence in service delivery.
Current and emerging models, practices and tools used by public libraries for the access and discoverability of resources. Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library systems and programs; thorough knowledge of library collection classification and selection tools and techniques; working knowledge of equipment and facilities required in a comprehensive library system; working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision.

Effectively plan and carry out programming. Provide leadership, innovation, collaboration and effective change solutions. Familiarity with an automated library system and the ability to assist patrons and staff on mobile devices and computer/internet usage. Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies, and Integrated Library Systems (ILS) software.

Ability to work flexible schedule including evenings and Saturdays. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing. Skill in analyzing and utilizing a variety of reports and records. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees, supervisors, other agencies and the general public.

Assists in the daily operations of the Circulation Desk, monitors the borrowing of materials and performs related public service duties as required. Must be available some nights and Saturdays.

Provides courteous public service at the circulation desk by responding promptly to patron requests according to established procedures. Makes the library collection accessible by following established circulation and cataloging procedures.

This position performs a variety of clerical duties, which include: assistance in opening and closing department; typing and filing; assisting in maintaining appropriate security on ground floor when reporting inappropriate patrons’ behavior to Librarian. May assist in collecting, recording and transferring all monies (cash or checks, in person or by mail) coming in, ordering supplies and calling repair services when necessary.

Prepares and checks materials being loaned; checks in materials and packs materials to be sent via the carriers. Distributes mail to appropriate departments.

High school diploma or GED required. Possession of a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and good driving record. Two years of college or appropriate public library experience with an automated library system preferred. Individual must possess working knowledge of library principles, methods and procedures; good communication skills with the ability to deal tactfully with others; attentive to detail, good judgment, good physical condition, ability to type at least twenty words per minute. Contributes to the smooth operation of daily functions by completing assigned projects without ongoing supervision. Establishes and maintains harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to speak Spanish desirable.

The mission of School on Wheels of Massachusetts is to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and one-on-one mentoring so children can reach their full potential. Our main program is one-on-one tutoring at shelters, hotels, learning centers, and schools. We are currently seeking a Site Coordinators for the Roy St. shelter in Fall River. The Site Coordinator supervises the tutors and students at a particular site, and is the connection among shelter/school staff, children and families, tutors, and School on Wheels staff.

Qualifications:

 College graduate
 Educator with classroom experience
 Excellent organizational and communication skills
 Flexibility and creativity
 Technology proficient

Preferred:

 CPR trained

Days and Times:

 Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:00-8:15pm*
 Tutoring sessions scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 7

*Site Coordinators will also be paid for up to 3 hours of prep time each week, as needed

Site Coordinator responsibilities include:

 Supervise students and tutors during designated tutoring times and provide learning resources and support as needed
 Model effective tutoring techniques for tutors
 Familiarity with all student academic information including literacy and math evaluations, teacher assessments, report cards, and IEP summaries
 Regular communication with tutors about their students, how their tutoring sessions are going, any additional support they might need, etc.
 Regular communication with SOWMA office, School on Wheels program partners, and students’ teachers and parents about any issues that arise concerning the program or a particular student
 Weekly tutoring schedules and reports

Required Trainings and Meetings (you will be paid for all meeting and training time):

 3- hour Tutor Training in August
 Total of 12 hours of Site Coordinator training in August
 Monthly Site Coordinator meetings, September-June, first Saturday of the month for 2.5 hours

  • You have a valid driver’s license with no DUI convictions or license suspensions within 5 years
  • EPA certification is a plus
  • OSHA 10 is a plus
