The Whaling Museum is hiring for two full-time staff positions:  Curator of Education and Foundation Relations Manager.  Both will play a vital role in helping the Museum serve its community.

Curator of Education
Reporting to the President, and working with the Senior Management team, the Curator of Education will have 4 primary areas of responsibility:
1) articulating and implementing a strategic vision adopted by the Board of Trustees
2) raising funds necessary to implement education objectives
3) oversight of staff responsible for the apprenticeship program, a comprehensive K-12 school visitation program, volunteer programs and outreach
4) communication of the educational mission and goals to various audiences

Foundation Relations Manager
The ideal candidate is a seasoned writer with a passion for the educational mission of the Museum. He/She understands the Museum’s role both locally and farther afield. An ability to craft cogent and compelling messages and communicate those messages both verbally and in writing is key. Research skills and a knowledge of the non-profit sector is a plus. He/She will work cross-departmentally to identify grant opportunities, develop and write proposals, and maintain/cultivate relationships with a portfolio of funders.

The mission of School on Wheels of Massachusetts is to educate children impacted by homelessness by providing academic support and one-on-one mentoring so children can reach their full potential. Our main program is one-on-one tutoring at shelters and schools. We are currently seeking a Site Coordinator at the Harbour House shelter in New Bedford. The Site Coordinator supervises the tutors and students at a particular site, and is the connection among shelter/school staff, children and families, tutors, and School on Wheels staff.

Qualifications:

  • College graduate
  • Educator with classroom experience
  • Spanish speaker preferred
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Flexibility and Creativity
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • CPR trained preferred

Days/Hours:

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00-8:00pm
  • Tutoring sessions scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2013
  • Site Coordinators will also be paid for up to 3 hours of prep time each week, as needed

Salary:

  • $15/hour

1. Airport Manager #2761930 – Professional, administrative and overall management resulting in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the New Bedford Regional Airport. Also responsible for determining maintenance and terminal operation requirements, including staff, to ensure appropriate service provisions. Responsible for developing capital improvement plans, airport improvement plans (AIP) and annual operating budgets. Responsible for presenting and enforcing current policy matters to the Airport Commission for approval. Responsible for conducting an active program of public information and promotion to assure the community’s recognition of the airport as an essential element of its quality of life and economic health. Other related work as required.

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in aviation management, public administration, business management or related field, and seven years’ experience, three of which have been in a supervisory capacity, in airport operations management (managing a facility similar or larger than the New Bedford Regional Airport), governmental management with emphasis on municipal management and budget preparation, or related field. AAAE certification a plus, but not required at this time. AAAE certification must be obtained within three years of employment. The City of New Bedford has a Residency Requirement.

Duties Include: Interviewing, some advocacy on behalf of clients, legal research, and the planning and implementation of legal education programs. The paralegal will work with attorney supervision.

  • General understanding of the problems encountered by low-income families and elders in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod & Islands;
  • Ability to conduct client interviews, community education events and administrative hearings;
  • Ability to meet, deal with and relate to people of divergent values, opinions and appearances;
  • Ability to plan and work independently, often under pressure;
  • Ability to work efficiently as a team member and to coordinate activities with other staff;
  • Experience in advocacy preferred;
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
  • Because of the outreach involved in this position, possession of a car during working hours is necessary.

Unemployment in New Bedford always seems to be twice the state average. As of April, 2013, the Massachusetts unemployment rate was at 6.4% and New Bedford’s sat at 12.5%. It’s a sad fact that we live in a state with a low unemployment rate compared to the national average, but New Bedford seems to continuously get left behind. I can say for a fact that there are plenty of jobs out there. There are generally 8,000+ jobs within 50 miles of New Bedford on our Job Portal. Many times the issue is simply matching up a job with a qualified job seeker. This is why I created our FREE job portal and just added a subscription service that allows NewBedfordGuide.com members to get new job notifications by e-mail. The Ocean Explorium is an ambitious initiative designed to meet the needs of students and our community in the 21st Century. As a comprehensive marine science education center, the Ocean Explorium uses a series of living aquatic environments, interactive exhibits and numerous outreach initiatives to promote a broader and deeper understanding of our local waters and the ocean beyond as the catalyst to interest learners of all ages in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Floor Operations / Gift Shop Management:  includes but is not limited to opening/closing the Ocean Explorium, supervise admissions operations, reconciliation of cash/credit activity, supervise gift shop operations (product research, purchase and inventory control), management of daily floor operations and customer service program, point of contact for birthday parties and other revenue generating programs, logistical support for special events

Volunteer Coordinator:  include recruitment through various media, assessment of skills for placement in proper department, training in all aspects of floor operations, coordinate volunteer rewards program, act as volunteer liaison, prepare schedules and supervise

Media/Marketing:  update/edit organization’s website, manage social media marketing including facebook, e-newsletter and blogs

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:  Bachelors degree from a four-year college or university.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
