World Fiddle Day Event Brings Communities Together in New Bedford

World Time Fiddle Session will be hosting a multi-cultural, interactive, traditional music event called “World Fiddle Day” at Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford on May 20th.

The event runs from 12:30 to 5:30 pm and includes open playing opportunities for musicians, children’s activities, vendors, workshops, dancing, and a full schedule of performances by traditional fiddle music acts. In celebration of the world’s diverse fiddling traditions, featured performances include Old-Time American, Canadian, Cape Verdean, European, Gypsy, and Yiddish offerings. Cape Verdean fiddler John Miranda and Australian fiddler Mark Russel will be bringing the more distant traditions to New Bedford, while New England style caller Louisa Pugh will help reinforce native roots.

“Building community through traditional music is the goal with World Fiddle Day, as it is at all Old Time Fiddle Session events,” says the organization’s founder Jeff Angeley. As such, interactive activities for children and adults round out the day’s offerings. Some highlights of the programming include a Children’s Art Lab instrument painting station, contra dancing for beginners, henna design by Unravel Henna, and a selfie station with real instruments for props. Open Old Time, Irish, and Quebecois jams and workshops for musicians will also run for the full length of the event. There will be food and craft vendors, raffles, and games as well.

Tickets are $15 for individuals and $40 for family passes. Online sales are available at Eventbrite. In person sales can be found at the Hippo boutique in New Bedford, The Symphony Music Shop in Dartmouth, and Children’s Art Lab in Mattapoisett.

About Old Time Fiddle Session Old Time Fiddle Session and Community Gathering was founded in January of 2017. Shakespeare in Buttonwood to return, announces auditions for Macbeth

Shakespeare in Buttonwood Park, New Bedford’s free Shakespeare event, is holding open auditions for its second summer. The announcement of Macbeth follows the event’s successful launch last summer with a performance of Romeo & Juliet. Shakespeare in Buttonwood marks the second collaboration between the City of New Bedford including the New Bedford Free Public Library, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Beaches, and Mayor’s Office, and local fringe theater company, The Glass Horse Project.

Macbeth tells the story of a young general who, by the prophecy of three witches, sets out to become the King of Scotland. “You always want to produce something relevant,” Founding Artistic Director of Glass Horse Project Korey Pimental says. “I think it’s is a story about how far we’ll go to fulfill our desires, which is always an interesting thing to explore and dig deeper into.”

Last summer’s adaptation and production of Romeo & Juliet brought New Bedford to a post-apocalyptic matriarchal society where class and gender lines divided the two lovers. This year, Shakespeare in Buttonwood takes the city audience to the highlands of Scotland for a more “traditional” production of the Bard’s tragedy.

Alyssa Steen, who audiences may remember as scene-stealing Mercutio from last year’s production, trades jumping out of a trash can for the director’s seat in this year’s production.

“Macbeth is a very dark show from start to finish,” Steen said as she glanced up from editing the script for this year’s production. “From start to finish we have war, betrayal, and political chaos. The thing about it though, is that the audience can view those themes through an objective lens while still having them be relatable. There’s a magnetic pull to the difficult things in life we try to understand. Theatre helps us make that connection, and I’m beyond thrilled to help bring it to life.”

“My favorite thing about theater as a craft and an entity is the communal aspect of it. Everyone coming together, putting their trust in each other, and working together to create magic,” remarks Pimental. Last year’s launch included a one-day showing of Romeo & Juliet and 140 people attended the production. “Last year, we did the show with nine actors. I’m hoping to see friendly returning faces and a bunch of new ones coming to try something they may have never thought to try before. Shakespeare in the Park, as an entity, is about community and working together to create some magic, so I’m excited to see where this year will take both the production and the event.” he adds.

Open auditions for Shakespeare in Buttonwood’s production of Macbeth will be held on Saturday, May 19 at The New Bedford Free Public Library on 613 Pleasant St in New Bedford. Everyone is welcome to audition. General auditions are 11 am to 3 pm and as needed callbacks are from 4-5pm on the same night; please come prepared with a Shakespearean monologue, not exceeding one minute in length. Although it is preferred the monologue is memorized, it is not necessary. The performances will be in the middle of August, with an exact date to be announced. The date will be provided during auditions to prospective actors. Rehearsals will be every Saturday from 1 to 5 at the New Bedford Free Public Library. Please send any questions to theglasshorseproject@gmail.com, or find The Glass Horse Project on Facebook.

National Park to offer Youth Leadership Program

Local middle and high school students will once again have the opportunity to acquire new skills, learn about National Parks, and give back to the New Bedford community this spring. New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park continues its support of New Bedford’s young people with its Youth Leadership Academy, or YLA. Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is a free and immersive 3-month program for community members in Grade 5-12 from the Greater New Bedford area. This program offers experiential learning and volunteer opportunities for the youth of New Bedford.

The free program will offer these middle and high school students the opportunity to travel to a nearby National Park, volunteer at a hunger relief program, as well as learn about Frederick Douglass and what he accomplished while in New Bedford. Their culminating event will take place on June 14, AHA! Night, when they make a presentation about their experiences and share what they’ve learned in New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s theater.

The park will be working with local artist and teacher Lauren Savoia to run the program this spring.

Lauren Savoia is best known for her implementation of 21st century art education programs, and for creating both bronze sculptures and mixed media paintings. As an accomplished artist, art educator, program coordinator, and researcher, Ms. Savoia’s passion for serving her community through art is self-evident. Ms. Savoia studied at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2006, and is completed her Masters of Art Education degree in 2017.

Ms. Savoia is a certified art educator in both public schools and community-based organizations, working hard to promote the arts by creating collaborative and interdisciplinary opportunities across diverse communities.

She actively promotes art partnership programs that she designs and implements. Ms. Savoia is a leader and an advocate for the arts through fostering 21st century curriculum geared towards innovative ideas, and contemporary approaches to learning.

New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park was established by Congress in 1996 to help preserve and interpret America’s nineteenth century whaling industry. The park, which encompasses a 13-block National Historic Landmark District, is the only National Park Service area addressing the history of the whaling industry and its influence on the economic, social, and environmental history of the United States. The visitor center is wheelchair-accessible, and is free of charge. For more information, call the visitor center at 508-996-4095, go to www.nps.gov/nebe or visit the park’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/NBWNHP. New Bedford Seaport Cultural District debuts FREE events for statewide ArtWeek

The New Bedford Seaport Cultural District is proud to be an ArtWeek partner and collaborator, promoting the Creative Commonwealth and our Creative City. The festival aims to provide participants with new ways to get creative and make art and culture more accessible to everyone. This season, more than 70 percent of all ArtWeek events are free, including all of New Bedford’s events.

Presented by Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek announced its largest season lineup ever. The award-winning creative festival will offer more than 500 events in 155 neighborhoods across all six regions of the state from April 27 – May 6 — more than double the size of the 2017 festival.

“When we joined forces with Highland Street Foundation in 2013, I had no idea that there would be such enthusiastic support and demand for redefining cultural experiences and allowing people to take creativity into their own hands,” said Josiah A. Spaulding, Jr., President & CEO of the Boch Center.

“We invite everyone to participate in the fun activities for ArtWeek in New Bedford,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “ArtWeek is a great opportunity to see the artistic and cultural aspects of our city that helped to garner our designation as Most Creative Community in the Commonwealth by the Mass Cultural Council.”

The 2018 festival offers something for everyone, including a number of family friendly events in New Bedford’s Seaport Cultural District. At the MakerSpace at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park participants can learn about printing in the 19th century and walk away with their own sign, view a never-before-seen digital facsimile of the longest painting in America – the 1,275-foot-long Grand Panorama of a Whaling Voyage ‘Round the World at New Bedford Whaling Museum, celebrate amazing art by teens while dancing to a live DJ and shopping a trunk show at New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks!, attend a block party street festival of Portuguese art and culture presented by The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, paint with potatoes at New Bedford Farmer’s Market, watch a spellbinding magic show by teen magician Austin Jandrucko and then learn the basics of magic at the Whaling National Historical Park, attend the final screening and discussion of the New Bedford LGBTQ Winter Film Series, and get creative with two cool art projects for kids and families at NBAM/Artworks! entitled Re-thinking Recycling and Chalk the Walk.

Visit artweekMA.org to view the full calendar of statewide and New Bedford events.

In addition to the free and interactive events, two New Bedford organizations are participating in ArtWeek’s Light Up the Night challenge. The New Bedford Whaling Museum’s cupola on top of its building will radiate with colorful lights, and to celebrate SUPERFLAT NB’s community launch, they will paint and radiate solar lights along the fence on Acushnet Ave across from Custom House Square.

ArtWeek is an annual 10-day innovative festival featuring hundreds of unique and creative experiences that are hands-on, offering new ways to experience art and culture. ArtWeek was born in Boston in 2013 and recently expanded its footprint across the Commonwealth. This year, Mass Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism have joined ArtWeek as Lead Champions in this unique opportunity to shine a spotlight on the state’s creative economy. ArtWeek has also secured a network of more than 70 statewide, regional and local collaborators and over a dozen media partners to help promote the upcoming festival.

MORE ABOUT NEW BEDFORD SEAPORT CULTURAL DISTRICT:
Since 2014, New Bedford Seaport Cultural District has aimed to advance collaboration to be inclusive of all individuals in the arts, cultural sector, residences, and businesses. The intention is to impact the quality of life and economic activity of those living and visiting our city, whether that as a creator, participant, or audience member. The district currently contains 49 cultural attractions and 29 creative economy businesses.

On March 1, 2018, the MCC selected New Bedford as one of only six communities in the state to pilot a Cultural Compact, to develop a framework to spark creative partnerships between local government and cultural leaders within the community. The Cultural Compact is a collaboration of the New Bedford Seaport Cultural District, the New Bedford Cultural Council, the Mayor’s Office, and Mass Cultural Council. To learn more about the SCD, visit www.destinationnewbedford.org/seaport-cultural-district.

In support of the Commonwealth’s most powerful economic development assets – a thriving creative sector – the Mass Cultural Council’s Cultural Districts Initiative was authorized by an act of the Massachusetts state legislature in 2010, and launched in April 2011. These cultural districts help local arts, humanities, and science organizations improve the quality and range of their public programs so that more local families can benefit from them. They enhance the experience for visitors and thus attract more tourist dollars and tax revenue. And they attract artists, cultural organizations, and entrepreneurs of all kinds – enhancing property values and making communities more attractive. The Cultural District Initiative encourages Massachusetts’ communities to strengthen their sense of place, while stimulating economic activity, improving the experiences of visitors to our communities, and creating a higher quality of life.
