Dreamnight at Buttonwood Park Zoo will welcome 150 local children with physical disabilities

Wildest dreams come true for special guests of honor

For the staff of the Buttonwood Park Zoo and Zoological Society, June 6, will be one of the favorite nights of the year. The Zoo will welcome over 150 children with chronic healthcare needs for the Zoo’s 8th annual DreamNight.

For children who face the challenges of physical disability or illness every day, a trip to the zoo can present significant obstacles. But thanks to the international DreamNight project, the dream of a trip to Buttonwood Park Zoo will become a reality for kids from the Schwartz Center for Children, 21 FrienDS, the Kennedy-Donovan Center, and the IDDI Crystal Springs School.

“DreamNight is a very special night at the Buttonwood Park Zoo, ” said Kristen Gray, Director of Society Operations. “The relaxed atmosphere and the many happy families create a very unique feel to one of our favorite nights of the year! It is our honor to open the Zoo up to these special guests and we look forward to this event each and every year.”

DreamNight is possible through many sponsors including: Ray and Sue Drouin, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Hallsmith Sysco, Max’s, Naughty Dawgs Express, State Fruit, and the Toe Jam Puppet Band.

Begun in 1996 at Rotterdam Zoo in The Netherlands, DreamNight is now internationally observed on the first Friday in June every year. As the official DreamNight at the Zoo website states, “don’t dream your life, live your dreams!”

District Attorney Sutter to Conduct 6th Annual Community Volunteer Fair

Saturday June 7th, 12:00PM – 3:00PM inside the Dartmouth Mall

On Saturday June 7th, District Attorney Sam Sutter’s Office will conduct its 6th Annual Volunteer Fair, inviting members of the public to learn about different volunteer opportunities throughout the community. In collaboration with SouthCoast Serves and the Dartmouth Mall, the Volunteer Fair is open to the public and will be held from 12:00PM – 3:00PM inside the Dartmouth Mall, located at 200 Dartmouth Mall, Dartmouth, MA 02747.

District Attorney Sutter’s Volunteer Fair emphasizes his belief that a commitment to service builds stronger communities. In addition, youth reap benefits from volunteers who serve as role models, empowering them to make positive choices and making them less likely to engage in delinquent behavior.

In October 2007, District Attorney Sutter began encouraging volunteerism with the launch a unique Volunteer Initiative within his office stating, “Prevention and prosecution go hand in hand to make our community safer.” Through this initiative, staff have contributed more than 19,000 hours of volunteer service in organizations of their choosing before and after work hours. To name a few, staff are involved in mentoring, coaching and tutoring, annual participation in city-wide clean-ups, and individual and office-wide commitments to providing donations and services to those in need. In addition, staff volunteer at numerous office-sponsored free sports clinics throughout the year. Since 2007, more than 4,400 children have participated in 68 clinics led by 1,426 total volunteers.

Seeking to extend the value of service beyond the office, District Attorney Sutter hopes that members of the community will attend the Volunteer Fair and take an interest in volunteering. “I hope to inspire others, not only those in the DA’s Office, but others to volunteer to improve our communities and make them safer,” District Attorney Sutter says.

More than thirty agencies will be present to staff information tables, answer questions, and assist persons to sign up with various volunteer opportunities. By engaging a diverse group of exhibitors, attendees are invited to see that there are volunteer opportunities that suit every interest – from working with youth, to assisting the elderly, watering trees, growing farm-fresh food for the hungry, and helping animals in shelters.

Some of the organizations include: AHA! New Bedford; Battleship Cove; Big Brothers Big Sisters; Bristol County Regional Coalition for Suicide Prevention; Buzzards Bay Coalition; Coastline Elderly Services; DrugFree NB; Forever Paws; Friends of Buttonwood Park; Gifts to Give; Mercy Meals & More; Operation Clean Sweep; Samaritans of Fall River & New Bedford; Sharing the Harvest Community Farm; SMILES Mentoring; United Way of Greater New Bedford; YWCA of Southeastern Massachusetts; and others. *An extended list can be found on the event flyer included with this release.

Members of the media are invited to attend and speak with volunteer providers and members of District Attorney Sutter’s office about their volunteer experiences.

The Trustees of Reservations to host Farmer’s Market at Westport Town Farm

The Farmer’s Market will kick-off on Saturday, June 14th and will continue through September on Saturdays from 830am -1pm (Illustration by Anne Winner)

The Trustees of Reservations, (The Trustees), the nation’s oldest land trust and one of Massachusetts’ largest conservation organizations, has announced the inaugural season of the Westport Farmer’s Market at the Westport Town Farm, 830 Drift Rd., Westport, MA 02790. The Trustees welcome all to enjoy the relocated Westport Farmer’s Market at Westport Town Farm on Saturdays all season long starting June 14th, 2014 from 830am-1pm. The market will host over 12 local vendors offering items ranging from local shellfish, fresh flowers, vegetables, jewelry and much more.

For a complete listing of vendors, please see below. This is the first season the market will be located at Westport Town Farm and the Trustees are excited to continue the summer tradition.
“The Trustees are proud to be the stewards of an iconic piece of town history, Westport Town Farm” says John Vasconcellos, Southeast Regional Director for the Trustees. “The addition of the Westport Farmer’s Market to Town Farm is a celebration of the property’s agricultural heritage and the spirit of how this community cares for itself.”

The Trustees who preserve for public use and enjoyment, properties of scenic, historic and ecological significance entered into a lease agreement with the Town of Westport in November of 2006, granting the organization the management authority of much of this historic landscape for public enjoyment. An antique farmhouse, dairy barn, corn crib, and stone walls dating back to Colonial times complete the picture of this bucolic working farm that served as a “poor farm” and infirmary for more than 100 years. In the fall of 2008, The Trustees initiated a Community Gardens project that honors the Town Farm’s tradition of helping to feed people in need in Westport and nearby towns. The addition of a Farmer’s Market to the many offerings at Westport Town Farm will further highlight the property’s agricultural tradition.

The property’s community garden and agricultural operations are spearheaded by Farm Manager Steve Connors. Mr. Connors has been with the Trustees for six years as the Farm Manager and is happy to have assisted in finding a new home for the Westport Farmer’s Market. “The addition of the Farmer’s Market to Town Farm is a great way to expand our agricultural offerings to the public while maintaining the tradition and spirit of this special place,” said Mr. Connors. “Farmer’s markets are as much about community as they are about contributing to the local farm economy, and I can’t think of a better place to host one.”

The Farmer’s Market will also host a variety of partner organizations offering activities for children and other entertainment. Golden Touch Alpaca Farm will be demonstrating Alpaca Shearing during the first week of the market, the second week will have a pickling demonstration by Dan George – founder of Smoke & Pickles – and throughout the season the market will incorporate new attractions each week. Market attendance is free to the public and all market related family activities are free as well. For more information on vendors, market products or a schedule of activities please contact sconnors@ttor.org.

It’s good for the earth, it’s good for the soul. However, when you work all week and want to head outdoors to blow off some steam, you want a sunny, clear weekend once in a while! While we’ll dip into the lower 40s in terms of low temperatures, we’ll reach a high of 70 degrees on Sunday. Let’s get out there and enjoy the many things to do on the South Coast!
