Cape Verdean Businesses of New Bedford for Fogo: Volcano Eruption Relief

Help out a great cause and have a blast while doing it!

Cape Verdeans around the world are united in solidarity as their motherland is disrupted by volcanic eruptions on the island of Fogo. The ongoing natural disaster that began on November 23rd, 2014 has been a source of panic and grief for those who live on the islands and the Cape Verdean Diaspora.

Fogo itself is devastated by the destruction of property, homes and community, a tragedy that the island has not seen the volcano’s last eruptions in 1995 and 1951. With an evacuation order in effect since the blasts intensified on November 30th, the eight remaining islands are facing an influx of refugees who have lost their homes and possessions.

The Cape Verdean government has assembled a committee to address the crisis, and is working with national and international agencies to address the situation as it unfolds. The overwhelming number of Cape Verdean immigrants and descendants who live outside of Cabo Verde are also affected as their family members and friends are looking to them for support. The Cape Verdean government, community, international relief organizations, other nations and the Diaspora have mobilized to assist Cabo Verde during this critical time.

In light of these recent events, Cape Verdean businesses and community members of New Bedford have come together for a collaborative relief effort. There will be a fundraising event on Sunday, December 14th at 3:00 PM at the New Bedford Fisherman’s Club. All members of the community are welcome to attend and enjoy music, food, sports, raffles and more as we collect funds to benefit those affected by the volcanic eruptions.

In addition, we will host an ongoing effort to collect non-perishable food items, clothing and other quality goods to send to Cabo Verde. If you have any questions about our efforts, or you would like to make a contribution, feel free to contact Hello Cabo Verde at (508) 998-8213, or any other local Cape Verdean business. We appreciate your charity during this difficult time for the Cape Verdean community.
