New Bedford families invited to Scholastic’s Ultimate Summer Reading Road Trip Celebration

In an effort to get more children reading this summer, the 2017 Scholastic Summer Reading Road Trip RV will visit Alfred J. Gomes Elementary School on Tuesday, June 6 from 5 p.m.–7 p.m. ET. Kids will have the opportunity to participate in their very own “pop-up” reading festival, meet some of their favorite authors, and engage in fun reading activities.

Throughout the summer, the RVs will visit 50 U.S. cities and towns nationwide, traveling more than 10,000 miles to spread the message about the importance of summer reading to kids. At the Alfred J. Gomes Elementary School reading road trip stop, kids will enjoy a fun day of free reading activities including:

· An author visit and book signing from Jarrett J. Krosoczka (author of Star Wars: Jedi Academy), Sarah Mlynowski (author of Upside Down Magic & Whatever After), and Ruth Horowitz (author of Crab Moon & Bat Time)
· An activity tent filled with reading activities
· Giveaway tables and a prize wheel
· Costume characters including: Clifford the Big Red Dog® and Geronimo Stilton

More summer fun: To keep kids reading all summer, parents, educators, libraries, and community partners can sign up kids for the 2017 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a free, global, online, and mobile reading program designed to help kids turn the “summer slide”—the learning loss which can occur over the summer months—into a “summer leap” by discovering the power and joy of reading for fun.

Starting, May 8th, and throughout the summer, kids can log their reading minutes and unlock digital rewards. At the end of the summer, the school in each U.S. state, territory, and in the District of Columbia that has logged the most reading minutes will be given the title “Best in State” and will be featured in the 2018 Scholastic Book of World Records. In addition, special recognition will be given to the top five libraries and community partner organizations nationwide with the most minutes read. Families can visit the site to access free resources, including free summer reading book lists across all ages in both English and Spanish.
