South Coast Weekend Guide (May 27-30)

After a long stretch of clouds and rain, this Memorial Day weekend is looking to be sunny and warm.  Weather.com predicts mixed clouds and sun with temperature highs from 74°F – 80°F– perfect weather to enjoy the long holiday weekend! This Memorial Day, be sure to remember, honor, and thank our U.S. soldiers who risk and lose their lives everyday to keep our country.

While enjoying the weather and holiday, definitely check out one or some of the many opportunities in the area to listen to local music, celebrate nightlife, enjoy the arts, benefit a good cause, or support your local Memorial Day Parade. FRIDAY, MAY 27

Before kicking off the long weekend, take literally one minute to participate in the LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivor Program Vote for YMCA New Bedford.  Simply use the internet to visit the YMCA New Bedford page on LIVESTRONG’s Community Impact Project website . Vote and help the YMCA Southcoast receive funding and bring LIVESTRONG® to our community.

After doing your good deed, head downtown to enjoy some music and nightlife! Ebony Keys featuring Michelle Hill will be playing at Candleworks Restaurant (72 N. Water St.) at 9:30 pm. Or if you are looking for an in-house DJs to celebrate the start of a long weekend with music and dancing, head over to Hibernia or Catwalk after 10pm.  You can also check out DJ Kraz at Fins or DJ Paul Brogna at Rose Alley Ale House . SATURDAY, MAY 28

During the day, take an opportunity to get some exercise with a walk at Buttonwood Park. Then spend the afternoon enjoying the arts. Gallery X (169 William St) is currently featuring the Word Up! and Water Movement Art Show exhibits. Gallery X is open from 11am-3pm.

After 9:30pm, enjoy the night with music by J. Kelley Band playing at Rose Alley Ale House (94 Front St). Saturday also brings another opportunity to hear Ebony Keys featuring Michelle Hill at Candleworks Restaurant (72 N. Water St.). For other nightlife, enjoy the video lounge at Hibernia or check out DJ Jr Ray at Fins.

SUNDAY, MAY 29

memorial day weekend bbqSleep in late and eventually start Sunday Funday with a yummy brunch at Cork Wine and Tapas (90 Front Street). You could also choose to enjoy a lazy Dog Day Sunday with your best four-legged friend at Hibernia, “the area’s only dog-friendly bar.” No bad dogs allowed, and “pet friendly beer” is served. What a great way to celebrate the long weekend and include your pup!

MONDAY, MAY 30

Enjoy a day off and celebrate Memorial Day by showing support and lining the streets of your local parade! Thank and honor our U.S. troops and soldiers with any of the following Memorial Day festivities: The New Bedford Memorial Day Parade (11:30am, parade will begin on Parker Street and proceed to Clasky Park); The Dartmouth Memorial Day Parade (9:30am, parade will begin at Appongansett Park and proceed to Dartmouth Police Station, with a memorial at the Veterans Monument and a short ceremony at the Town Hall); Fairhaven Memorial Day Parade (8:30am, beginning at Main Street and proceeding north to Riverside Cemetary.)

Don’t forget about the Lakeside Family Festival, going on now thru Monday in East Freetown.  It’s a short drive from New Bedford, and lots of fun!  And as always, when you’re out and about in the South Coast area, remember to take advantage of New Bedford Guide’s South Coast Discounts.
