On Sunday evening at approximately 9:45pm north end officers were sent to the 400 block of Summer St. regarding a Star Cab driver that was stabbed in the back of the head. The 35-year old New Bedford man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The victim stated that he was sent to the 100 block of Smith St. and the suspect had asked for him by name. Upon arriving at the location, a male approached the cab out of nowhere and began punching him in the head with a knife. He suffered two lacerations to the back of the head while seated in the driver’s seat of the cab. The cab driver was unable to provide a description of the suspect.

Also in the cab was the victim’s girlfriend. She claimed to be busy on the phone and did not see the assault happen. She happened to look up and see her boyfriend bleeding from the head.

This incident appears to be personal in nature and not a robbery attempt.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact Det. William Sauve at 508-991-6300 ext. 79514 or leave an anonymous tip at 508-961-4584.
