About City on a Hill
Opened in 1995 as a single high school, City on a Hill has expanded to a network of three high schools in the cities of Boston and New Bedford. Founded on the belief that all students can achieve, CoaH sets high standards for all students and empowers teachers in the decision-making process to implement those standards.
City on a Hill schools are tuition-free and open to all students. There is no entrance exam; students are admitted by a random lottery with new students admitted in the ninth grade only. Small by design, each school allows for a maximum enrollment of 280 students in grades 9-12. Regardless of their prior educational attainment 100% of City on a Hill’s graduates pass the MCAS and 100% earn college acceptance or placement in a post-secondary program appropriate to their learning needs.
