The Norton Police Department responded to reports of “shots fired” at Pitney Bowes Global Logistics on Leonard Street on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, police discovered that two of the three people involved in the argument had already left the scene.

Preliminary investigation suggests that 26-year-old Chaquira Santiago-Ortiz of New Bedford was upset with co-worker Ivanda Nunes-Gomez for talking to her husband, Jonathan Perez-Rolon inside the plant. Santiago-Ortiz allegedly then went outside, grabbed a handgun from her car, and fired a shot before fleeing the scene.

Two hours later, both Santiago-Ortiz and her husband Perez-Rolon went to the Norton Police Department where Santiago-Ortiz was then placed under arrest. Her attorney Colleen Tynan, stated that Santiago-Ortiz has a license to carry and that the gun went off accidentally.

Prosecutors for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts disagree with Santiago-Ortiz’s claim of an accidental discharge.

Santiago-Ortiz was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, improper storage of a firearm, disorderly conduct, and disturbing the peace.
